The largest Suffolk ewes sale ever seen in Australia is set to take place in Kyneton next month. The Suffolk Sheep Breeders Association of Victoria, in conjunction with Elders and Landmark, will host an inaugural Suffolk Ewe Auction at the Kyneton Saleyards on February 5. More than 300 ewes, and a selection of rams, will be up for sale at the auction which aims to bring Suffolk breeders from all around Victoria to buyers in one convenient location. More news: V/Line implements extreme heat timetable as region warms up Suffolk breeders association secretary Sarah Correa said the Suffolk breed had gained popularity in recent years with both hobby and commercial sheep farmers. She said this was due to the breed's adaptability, growth and eating quality traits. "There's a big interest in Suffolks in central Victoria because they do well in the climate over winter," Ms Correa said. The sale, dubbed "Australia's Largest Suffolk Ewe Auction". will be an inaugural event at Kyneton that aims to bring breeders and buyers together. "Definitely for Suffolk ewes it's one of the biggest sales," Mr Correa said. "Usually it's the rams that are the feature. A lot of ewes are sold out of the paddock. This is the first time we're having them for sale in an open market situation so it will be interesting. "For breeders hoping to pick up excess stock for their specialty studs it will be interesting but there will be a range of commercial ewes as well." Ms Correa said the sale would be ideal for those wanting to start their own Suffolk flock. "For new breeders it might be hard for them to find out were and how to get into the market, but now we've done the hard work for them," she said. "We've pulled some quality stock from the top breeders in our society.
