Well a new year is with us and not much has changed since my last report as we still have COVID-19 with us and restrictions are still in force as we battle our way through life. Thankfully all my family have been vaccinated and have avoided any major illness.
I trust all my readers are well and enjoying life to the best of the circumstances we are experiencing.
Wedding anniversaries
Two well known couples and friends of mine celebrated New Year's Day in a special way as it was their wedding anniversaries.
Congratulations to Margaret and Colin Schulz who celebrated their golden wedding - 50 years - on January 1. They had a household full of family who came home for the occasion as well as the holidays.
Congratulations are also extended to Jan and Jack Weekes who celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary on January 1.
With the current situation and restrictions both couples had a low key celebration but I am sure it was a happy and memorable time for them.
Passing of Shirley Cross
News was received of the passing of Mrs Shirley Anne Cross of Taree and formerly of Tinonee on Thursday, December 30 at the age of 85 years.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband Lance Cross a number of years ago and they will be remembered for their ownership of Tinonee Butchery, firstly in Hutchinson Street and then in the shopping complex in Beecher Street beside the general store.
Shirley was a much loved mother to Yvette, Nicole and Cherie and their partners, a grandmother and great-grandmother.
Shirley's funeral took place in the Chapel of Manning Great Lakes Memorial Gardens on Monday, January 10 and was followed by a private interment in the Lawn Cemetery.
Sincere condolences are extended to the family on their loss.
Tinonee Museum reopens
Members of Tinonee Historical Society returned to museum duties on Tuesday, January 11 after their Christmas/New Year holiday break.
At this time the museum will be open on Tuesday/Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 2.30pm. It hasn't been confirmed if it will operate on Saturdays but hopefully will soon be able to do so.
Passing of Marie Filewood
It was sad to learn of the passing of Mrs Marie Jean Filewood (nee Martin) late of Banyula Village Old Bar on January 3 at the grand age of 102 years and 7 months.
Marie was a member of the well known Burrell Creek Martin family and married Rex Filewood, who pre-deceased her a number of years ago.
Marie's funeral service was held at the Taree Uniting Church on Tuesday, January 11 prior to her burial at Bo Bo Cemetery with her family members.
Another chapter in the history of the Burrell Creek district has been closed with Marie's passing.
Farewell and goodbye
Members of Wingham Anglican Parish will come together on Sunday morning, January 16 to say farewell and goodbye to a strong supporter of the parish both at Wingham and Tinonee, Mrs Maureen Turner, who is soon to leave our area and head to Queensland to live.
Maureen has been very involved with the church community and also is well known for her work with The Riding for The Disabled organisation.
All wish her well in her new venture.
