Cundletown Public School Year 4 student Connor Wood has written a poem about war

The 10-year-old has written a five-stanza poem about war that has left his family, classmates, teachers, and RSL Sub-branch members in awe.

Connor wrote the poem on Remembrance Day this year, and said everyone who he has read it to since has gotten quite emotional.

"A lot of the teachers were crying, I think it really touched them."

Connor and his classmates at Cundletown Public School have been studying poetry and were tasked to 'write a poem on something you have a strong connection to'.

With a strong passion for history, Connor says the purpose of his poem is to entertain his readers by also touching on important parts of history that have shaped the life we live today.

He hopes his work will reach thousands of people, particularly people Connor's age as war history is something that the needs to be remembered, he said.

Connor has read a lot about the wars, including his favourite, 'The Anzac March', and said it's a topic that really interests him.

"War is something that has killed a lot of people and has brought a lot of tragedy," Connor said.

"I hope this stops bad things from happening so that people live a happy life without being killed."

After reading his poem to the class, Connor was asked to read it to the Years 5 and 6 classes and the other teaches.

"I was nervous, but the poem was so good the teachers' wanted the other students to hear it," he said.

Connor's grandfather, Eddie Wood said the whole family is very proud of Connor.

"To come up with something like that is incredible," Eddie said.

"We have always instilled in our kids and grandkids since we came from England to be caring and to always think of others," Eddie said.

Connor has also written several other poems, including one about his family's home which was damaged in the March 2021 floods to the Manning.

"I like to write stuff that I know or have read about," Connor said.

Ever since his classmates read some of his poems, they have been asking for his help, which Connor said is 'pretty cool'.

Connor's younger sister Taylor said she was very proud of him and hopes he will be famous one day too.
