Transgender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard made an early exit in her Olympic debut, the New Zealander missing all three snatch attempts in a historic appearance in Tokyo.

Hubbard joined Quinn - a Canadian football player - in being one of the first openly transgender athletes to compete at an Olympic Games.
Quinn is assured a medal after Canada's semi-final defeat of the United States earlier in the night.
The 43-year-old Hubbard began as an outside medal shot, but failed her opening 120kg attempt and two 125kg snatch attempts, the second a close miss despite Hubbard appearing to steady under the bar.
Her three fails meant she was knocked out of the event before the clean and jerk stage.
Hubbard competed as a man in junior weightlifting events and transitioned at the age of 35, winning a place in the women's super-heavyweight medal round after coming back from serious injury sustained at Gold Coast's Commonwealth Games.
After her third attempt she made the 'heart' symbol with her hands and pushed it out to the cameras at the Tokyo International Forum.
There were no crowds but plenty of journalists in the building, who were handed a 20-page set of guidelines on how they should report on transgender athletes.
Australian rival Charisma Amoe-Tarrant, who has warmly welcomed Hubbard's participation in her event, successfully snatched 95kg, 100kg and 105kg but sat out of the medal calculations ahead of the clean and jerk section.
Chinese world record holder Li Wenwen's victory gave China its seventh gold medal in weightlifting at the Tokyo Games, and her rivals never got close.
Li's total of 320 kilograms was 37 kilograms more than that of Emily Campbell, who became the first British woman to win a weightlifting medal.
Asked about Hubbard's participation earlier on Monday, Australian chef de mission Ian Chesterman it was a "very complex issue and it's going to have to be continued to be worked through over the coming months and years".
"That's part of the complexity of having equality and fairness - there's no simple solution to that," he said of balancing inclusion with fairness.
"Every effort is being made to work through it in a good way and methodical way and that continues to be explored.
"But ... in this competition, we should make sure we welcome Laurel into the field of play and make sure that she feels included, because that's the decision of the Games at the moment."
