MidCoast Council has prepared the draft Manning River Estuary and Catchment Management Program over the past three years in close consultation with a wide range of key stakeholders and community members.
In this final phase of its development, the draft is on public exhibition to ensure the needs and wants of the local community have been captured accurately, and that the actions identified within the program are realistic, achievable and measurable.
The 10 year program recognises the importance of the Manning River, its tributaries and the estuary to the 50,000 people living in the catchment area. The estuary is vital for oyster-growing, fishing, tourism and recreation.
From the upper reaches of the catchment the Manning and its tributaries provide water for drinking, stock and irrigation.
Cultural connections to the river and estuary for the Aboriginal community span many generations.
"The primary focus for the Manning River Estuary and Catchment Management Program is on addressing the impacts of land-use on water quality and ecosystem health, or more simply, looking after the river we love", explained council's Gerard Tuckerman.
"We all use, enjoy and benefit from the Manning River in different ways", Gerard added. "Whether that's for recreation, agriculture, cultural connection, for drinking water, or something else altogether, they all rely on a healthy ecosystem and clean water".
