'Yalawanyi Gunyah', which means sitting/meeting place, is the proposed name for the former Masters building that will house council's new administration and customer service centre from January 2021.
Council has been working with Gathang language holders to develop a suitably significant name for the building for several months, general manager Adrian Panuccio said.
"The name Yalawanyi Gunyah is significant because of the nature of the business that will occurs in the building and the opportunity the building provides for the community to visit - through the customer service centre, council chambers, gallery space and public café."
Mr Panuccio said using Gathang for the building name both honours the fact council's new administration and customer service centre is on Biripi Country, and is a tangible, visible commitment to reconciliation.
Councillors will discuss the naming of the building at the next council meeting on Wednesday, October 28. Members of the community can watch the proceedings via a link on council's website, with the livestream beginning at 2pm.
