BY any measure it has been a difficult year, what with all the injuries the Roosters are copping in the NRL. And of course there's that COVID thing.

However, on Friday, there will be a ray of light. A reason to be optimistic. Friday will be a good day. If nothing else goes right this year, then at least be assured that Friday August 7 will be a standout. A game breaker. We think we've explained this enough.
For some, Friday is the most important day of the year. A Holy Day of Obligation for you Catholics out there.
This will be the first Friday in August - International Beer Day (IBD).
This momentous occasion has been celebrated world-wide since 2007. It was founded in California by a visionary named Jesse Avshalomov. Jesse really should be President of the USA. He'd certainly be a massive improvement on the incumbent.
We've long said that more should be made of International Beer Day (IBD) at a local level. We recall penning an editorial 10 or so years ago urging the then Greater Taree City Council to get right behind the International Beer Day concept.
We argued that the place has been longing for a massive annual event ever since the sad demise of the once great Aquatic Festival back in the mid-1990s.
We said International Beer Day (IBD) celebrations could comfortably fill the void - a parade down Victoria Street followed by all manner of activities in Queen Elizabeth Park. This would be Tastefest on steroids.

It would be sort of like Duff Gardens from The Simpsons. If you've never watched The Simpsons, well, that's your loss.
Of course Greater Taree City Council (GTCC) didn't take up the idea. Little wonder the State government sacked 'em.
Perhaps the federal government should consider switching Australia Day from January 26 to the first Friday in August to incorporate International Beer Day (IBD). Organise a couple of kegs, announce the Australian of the Year and let the party begin. This makes so much sense.
This Friday's International Beer Day (IBD) will be somewhat restrained we would guess given the current restrictions in place due to COVID-19.
However, we shouldn't let a global pandemic quell our appreciation for the magical brew that is beer. We'd like to think that even non-lovers of beer would be keen to get involved with the festivities on Friday.
We've been told there are people who don't like beer. No-one we know, we quickly add. However, those weirdos shouldn't be shunned just because their tastes lie elsewhere. We beer drinkers are nothing if not magnanimous.
"He was a wise man who invented beer." Plato said that.
And he was one smart bloke.
Cheers.
