A Smiths Lake man aged in his 40s is believed to be one of two men killed by a B-double truck on the Pacific Highway south of Ballina.

About 8pm on Monday, May 11, the drivers of an SUV, believed to be a Grafton man aged in his 30s, and a semi-trailer, believed to be the Smiths Lake man, were both travelling south on the highway.
The drivers became involved in a minor altercation, stopped about five kilometres south of Woodburn and got out of their vehicles.
Witnesses told Richmond Police District the men were fighting in the northbound lane when they were struck by the B-double, being driven by a 35-year-old Albury man. Both men sustained multiple injuries and died at the scene.
The driver of the truck was taken to Ballina Hospital where he underwent mandatory blood and urine testing.
The highway was closed for almost nine hours while the crime scene was examined.
