The COVID-19 pandemic and the public health orders meant no dawn or commemorative services would be held. Instead Australians were asked to stand in their driveways as the sun rose in tribute to the fallen.
A small ceremony was held at 9am at the Memorial Clock in Taree.
The Anzac Day service looked very different at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra this year, with only a small number of attendees gathered for the live streamed service at dawn.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison reminded the pared back service and those watching from home that this was not the first time Anzac Day traditions had been interrupted.
"On Anzac Day 1919, the first after the Great War, there was no city marches or parades for the returning veterans because Australia was battling the flu pandemic. Though our streets were empty the returning veterans were not forgotten," Mr Morrison said.
Pandemic lockdown aside, we remembered them.
