Hazardous surf conditions at Elizabeth Beach forced host Pacific Palms Surf Life Saving Club to move competition to Wallis Lake.
The change presented interesting challenges for competitors, as the surf no longer played its part in the outcome of the races. Racers had to rely on their skill alone as they received no assistance or hindrance from the swell and waves.
Event co-ordinator Elana Knight said the move was supported by crew sweeps and water safety experts.
"I expect dozens of crews would have pulled out had we been in the surf, it was simply too dangerous," Elana said.
"'Lizzy' (Elizabeth Beach) can be fickle and the break deceptive for those who are unfamiliar with it."
