The helicopter made the landing near Crawford River, on Saturday, December 7.
The bureau said during aerial fire control operations, the pilot detected a tail rotor issue, disconnected the water bucket and commenced a precautionary landing. The helicopter subsequently made a hard landing, resulting in substantial damage.
AA spokesperson for the bureau said as part of the investigation the ATSB will interview the pilot and review other available data.
A report will be released at the end of the investigation, the spokesperson said. "Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant stakeholders so appropriate and timely safety action can be taken."
