Club Old Bar, Old Bar Beach Tennis Club, Club Old Bar Social Golf Club, Old Bar Lions Club, LJ Hooker Old Bar Beach, Old Bar Pirates, Old Bar Barbarians and the Old Bar Men's Bowls Club came up with a way for the whole community to get together, 'Thank a Hero' and raise money.
Club Old Bar hosted a week of raffles with all profits going to the cause.
Then on Sunday, December 8 a big 'Thank A Hero' event was held at the club, consisting of a barefoot bowls tournament, jumping castles, sausage sizzle, 'thank you wall' with messages of gratitude and drawings, ham raffles, a silent auction and a huge live auction with all prizes auctioned off donated by local businesses, sporting groups, clubs and individuals.
Over the course of the week the Old Bar community raised over $31,500 for our local RFS, with $17,000 of this being raised at a live auction on Sunday night. Generous businesses from all over our region donated prizes, including Bing Lee Taree which donated more than $10,000 worth of electrical goods.
All the money will be donated to the Old Bar RFS, Mitchell's Island RFS and Rainbow Flat RFS.
Local fire brigades, emergency services and community services were invited to attend so that the community had the opportunity to thank them in person and so that they could be treated to a free dinner and some drinks.
MPs David Gillespie and Stephen Bromhead both in attended, showing their support and thanking our local heroes.
