In light of the ongoing drought and enforced level four water restrictions in the MidCoast Council local government area, Cruz Bliss, Jack Varka, Tray Minns, Nathan McKay and Tamarna Simon-Anderson have formed the Chatham Public School water saving team.
The team was formed following a discussion with assistant principal Janelle Blick about water restrictions.
"It was all their idea," Ms Blick said. "We were talking about it in class and they said 'can we do something about it'.
"So we've started a team within the school community to see what can be done.
"It's also a cost saving measure for the school."
So how are they going to do it?
Every morning, the boys check the school's water meter. They then write down the figure in a chart to compare results from previous days.
"They want to see how much the school is using during level four water restrictions," Ms Blick said.
The team has also placed buckets under the bubblers to collect excess water. The water is then emptied onto the school's vegetable garden.
Their newfound knowledge has been passed on to other students.
"They've made posters to inform the other students and they've gone into classrooms to talk to them about it," Ms Blick said.
Tamarna used his artistic skills to create the logo for the posters.
The school will continue water saving measures after the water restrictions are eased while the team will be kept intact.
