On Wednesday, May 22 Wingham Showground Trust president Rob Walsh and members of the Wingham Showground Trust joined with Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead to officially turn the first sod of soil.
Wingham is the main township for the Upper Manning's country and farming communities and the Showground is home to 17 local organisations and hosts a number of events and festivals throughout the year including the Wingham Show (first held in 1885), rodeos, campdraft, Akoostic Music Festival, and Beef Week.
"The showground holds a special place in the heart of the community and the events held here are major economic drivers for the Upper Manning and local small business," Mr Bromhead said.
The works when completed will include:
- A multipurpose event arena which will replace the dilapidated cattle pavilions
- New wool and sheep shed
- New amenities block with toilets and showers
- Tea room verandah and covered walkway
- Expansion to the Lapidary Club Gem and Mineral Museum
The new amenities block with toilets and showers is the first work to be commenced.
"I am so pleased to see this project get underway which will ensure the showground facilities are able to be enjoyed by the next generation and beyond," Mr Bromhead said.
Funding for the upgrades was secured under Stronger Country Communities as part of the Regional Growth Fund and the Crown Reserves Improvement Fund.
