During a visit to Australia to entertain troops, Mr Hope was involved in a sea plane crash at Laurieton.
After the Taree volunteers organised the salvage of the plane and his transport to Williamtown, Mr Hope dropped by the plot room to thank all those involved.
One of those to meet him, Harry Dreyer, relives the encounter in the video.
MidCoast Stories Janine Roberts said the incident was not publicised locally at the time.
"The only reason we know about this is the incident was written about in the VAOC newsletter and so that's the only piece of evidence we have that Bob Hope actually came to Taree," she said.
