The two new vehicles for our unit are due at the end of this month after signage by Barrier Signs is completed. They will replace our Mitsubishi fuel truck and our Toyota.
Our system of calling out boat crew is to change using the Telstra Dead Stop messaging system. Boat crews will be sent a text message and respond by clicking their availability or otherwise. The system is already in place at some other units and is very successful making callouts quicker.
Change to opening procedure will include a message stating that the weather will be read out at 0620 for anyone listening.
Rattletrap is on again this year on May 5 at Crowdy Beach and we will again be cooking the barbecue. It's always a good day.
We have six members training for boat crew and six more for radio training so recruitment is going well.
Anyone wishing to obtain a boat or jetski licence should do so now as the RMS is proposing to alter the way a licence is obtained including a theory session beforehand. No other details are available apart from starting mid April but even that has to be confirmed. The other point to note is the cost may increase.
The dredging of the Harrington Backwater and entry to main river has been put back to midyear with various Government Departments becoming involved. There also was a meeting in regards to the condition of Crowdy Harbour but nothing heard about it so far.
A new training program started on Monday March 18 at our training shed for trainee boat crew and this will be conducted every fortnight until they are passed off.
We had two incidents on Saturday March 9. In the morning a person broke their ankle on a fishing boat and we had to call an ambulance then in the afternoon a fisherman called saying that batteries were flat so a tow was required. He stated that he was 7kms NE of the light and 3klms offshore but with no battery power he couldn't supply Lat and Long. After some searching he was finally located 300m off Crowdy Surf Club, being blown there by the strong NE wind.
And to top the day off our base was struck by lightning, no injuries reported.
There were three more incidents this week but they will be in next months report.
