Fundraising by Taree High School students and a teacher taking part in the World's Greatest Shave for a Cure to support The Leukaemia Foundation has surpassed $3500.
That's well above the original $2000 target and looks set to grow this Friday when the shave, held during a whole school assembly, and a fundraising barbecue take place.
Students Lara Slade from year 11, Ivy Gray from year nine, Will Lyons from year eight, Michael Ling from year 12, Bohdi Styles from year 12 and Charentaye Lamb from year nine will all be shaving their heads. Year nine student Makyah Cusbert will be shaving off his impressive beard.
Science teacher Ian Reynolds's hair will be cut into a style to be chosen by a student - but he had a condition.
"They had to raise $400, 50 cents per student. They're getting there. It's a great way to raise money and to give support."
Ian said he may be ready to add the balance to the fundraising to reach the target he set the students.
Lara Slade, who has the longest hair, admits she's a little apprehensive and after originally being challenged by a friend to take part, she now has additional motivation on top of fundraising. "I'm doing it now to prove I'm not scared."
The students have been fundraising in various ways, through social media promotion to family support and friends.
Their hair will be shaved by Lara's aunty, Lyn Moroney, a hairdresser from Maitland, and Toni Hardes, a school SLSO who is also a trained hairdresser.
"Being brave enough to do it voluntarily is amazingly selfless," said SRC (school representative council) co-ordinator Kerrie Davy.
The event is an SRC initiative and the whole school has got on board. Kerrie said Lara, who is on the SRC, was really the one behind the push.
On Friday the SRC will run the event, barbecue and have done promotions and organised sponsors. McGrath Meats has donated 100 sausages (one third of the sausages being cooked for the barbecue) and Coles Taree is donating a voucher for the school to purchase supplies.
All other students are invited to wear wacky hairstyles on Friday, with the SRC also going around with hairspray.
