On Saturday, January 19 at 2pm there will be a “Defeating Leprosy Afternoon Tea” at the Presbyterian Centre, Albert Street, Taree.
Kashi will speak and his daughter will interpret for him.
As a seven-year old, Kashi contracted leprosy, seen as “a curse from the gods”.
He was banned from the home and he lived in the animal shed and cared for the buffalo. He was not allowed to attend school or to play with other children.
Then he was referred to Anandaban Hospital. Cured of leprosy, he returned home and was allowed to live with the family.
But then his hand became clawed and he returned to Anandaban Hospital where surgery enabled him to open and close his hand again.
Wanting to help others he proved so acceptable that he was offered work. For 30 years he has earned great respect and love. ”It is an amazing thing and a blessing that I am able to work with these leprosy patients,” he said. “I am happy that I am able to touch their hearts.”
Anandaban Hospital was established by The Leprosy Mission in 1957 because leprosy patients were neglected.
It is now the centre of excellence for leprosy referrals in Nepal. Research, holistic care and world-class reconstructive surgeries are carried out. The government is helped to extend its responsibility to leprosy sufferers.
This is Kashi’s first visit to Australia and it is a very brief visit. The auxiliary is delighted that this humble, compassionate man is visiting Taree.
A warm welcome is extended to all. Merchandise will be on sale. Afternoon tea will be served and there will be an opportunity to contribute to the work of The Leprosy Mission by way of a free-will offering.
In the past year $7500 was sent from Taree for relief in Nepal, Papua New Guinea and Timor Leste.
