The MidCoast Council and Little Blue Dinosaur Foundation partnership will deliver the successful Holiday Time: Slow Down, Kids Around road safety campaign to the region.
The campaign involves a range of signage with core pedestrian road safety messages being placed around the area’s busiest locations.
The messages remind drivers to slow down and be vigilant during the school holiday period, and also encourage parents to hold hands with any children in their supervision.
The Little Blue Dinosaur Foundation was founded by parents Michelle and David McLaughlin, following the death of their four-year-old son Tom in a pedestrian road accident in 2014.
“After we lost our precious Tom, we wanted to honour him by educating families and children about the differing roadways they encounter when travelling to beautiful holiday hot-spots like the Mid Coast region,’’ Mrs McLaughlin said.
“So that’s when we reviewed all the factors that we could see that were present that allowed this terrible tragedy to occur and we came up with the foundation.”
Since the foundation began, towns all over Australia have joined with the couple to reinforce holiday road safety messages and try and prevent more tragedies occurring.
“What happened to Tom was an horrific accident and we’ve been inspired by Michelle, David and their foundation to try and ensure it doesn’t happen in our area,” MidCoast Council road safety officer Chris Dimarco said.
“These warnings are a timely reminder to both locals and tourists during the summer holidays, when people can often become a little complacent or relaxed, road safety is a 365 day message.”
