Cr Smith’s re-election followed a split vote between herself and Cr Karen Hutchinson.
Cr Smith said her first stint as deputy mayor was adjusting to life in an amalgamated council.
“For me, the last 12 months was about getting my head around everything. I try to keep an open mind about treating the area as a whole rather than separate areas,” Cr Smith said.
Cr Smith was Gloucester Shire Council deputy mayor at the time of the merger with Greater Taree and Great Lakes so discussing coastal issues has been a new experience.
“Everything is done a lot different compared to Gloucester like beaches and erosion. There are many similarities and differences from each council,” Cr Smith said.
Cr Smith’s main goal for her next tenure is to visit as many communities in the local government area as she can.
“I want to make a point of visiting outlying areas so they can see me face-to-face. I want people to come up and have a chat. It’s for the community and that’s why I’m doing it,” Cr Smith said.
