Bushland Voices is based at Bushland Hub, right next door to Bushland Tukka Café. The café is key to the group’s interactions as after every singing session, most members stay for coffee and a good old chat with a generous serve of laughter.
It was formed as a result of a NSW government Sing Your Age grant for seniors in 2018, awarded to Manning Valley Neighbourhood Services. MVNS chose this location because it is an inclusive hub for both indigenous and non-indigenous community members.
It warmly welcomes all people, regardless of experience or ability.
The choir is in the competent hands of a very experienced choral director who is currently achieving a great musical sound. Sandra Kwa is also the conductor of Wingham’s Wingsong Choir, a no-audition choir of more than 40 regular members.
“I am thrilled to be involved in another open-for-all choir in this Valley,” said Sandra.
“I’ve seen over the years what a huge difference it can make to the lives of people, especially those who might otherwise feel isolated, and also those who previously thought they “can’t sing”.
“I believe that everyone can sing, and choirs are a great way to find your voice and build confidence.
“We sing a wide variety of songs with something for everyone, one favourite being “With a Little Help from my Friends” by the Beatles. Its message is so appropriate,” said Sandra.
Last month, the choir visited Bushland Aged Care to entertain the residents with a mixture of the choir’s repertoire and some popular songs the residents could sing along to.
The performance was very well received and Bushland Voices has been invited back by the staff.
Even with its successes, the choir is actively seeking to reach out to more people, particularly near-by indigenous residents.
The last session this term, Friday September 28, starting 11am, will be an open day with a free light lunch served after the hour of singing.
Flyers will be distributed to let locals know that all are welcome to come and meet this enthusiastic bunch of friendly music-lovers.
