Sunday dawned and seemed to be heading for a wonderful, warm, sunny day but something happened by the time I was ready to go to the Billy Cart Derby, the wind began to blow and it became quite chilly.
I wandered on to inspect the billy carts and was amazed at the many shapes and sizes. They were made from a wheelbarrow, a trolley for moving heavy loads, a lawn mower and a miniature farm tractor. Some had three wheels, some had four and they were every colour of the rainbow.
After a short practise the racing began. There were the usual crashes and roll-overs but nobody was really badly hurt.
Brayden Turner won the school trophy and Mooral Creek took out the adult trophy, but I can’t remember who won the best looking billy cart. It even had blue tinted windows.
It was wonderful to see two girls in the adult race. They gave us a good spectacle when one raced away and the other had a spectacular roll over. In the spirit of the day’s racing the driver resumed her seat and finished the heat. Even the youngest drivers happily got back into their carts if they had a crash of any kind.
I don’t think times would have been as fast as last year as they had either a strong head wind or a side wind blowing hard most of the afternoon. Apart from the wind the only other disappointment was Mount George didn’t have anyone who could win the adult trophy and Mooral Creek did a great job of showing how it was done. Never mind, perhaps next year Mount George might have a champion to win it for the home town.
