The group will control a variety of weed species at the Manning Point Spit, with particular focus on Ground Asparagus Fern.
This weed is an aggressive and invasive weed which degrades the littoral rainforest at Manning Point.
The littoral rainforest in NSW is listed as a threatened ecological community.
The asparagus fern infestations are moderate to dense and are responsible for the production of a huge seed load which is being spread by birds into the littoral rainforest and undoing long term objectives to protect and enhance this endangered area.
A professional bush regenerator will be employed as a result of the funding.
Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said funding is used to help address environmental issues.
“I am delighted to hear that our community members are taking up this opportunity in a voluntary capacity to address the environment issues that matter most to them,” Dr Gillespie said.
“We all have a role to play in natural resource management and we can all contribute to the protection and restoration of our local environment.”
The funds are derived from the Environment Small Grants component of phase two of the Federal Government’s National Landcare Program.
Anyone interested in volunteering for the project or other projects in the Manning is urged to contact Manning Coastcare Group Coordinator Pieta Laing at pieta.manningcoastcare@gmail.com.
