Tinonee Historical Society president Jenny Cherry and myself were invited to speak to four year 2 classes at Taree Christian College Kolodong last Wednesday.
The students were studying the Past and Artefacts and, to help them learn, we took a number of items to explain their use and compare them with today’s equivalents. The children were a delight, showed a lot of interest and enjoyed handling many of the artefacts. Thanks to the teachers who organised the visit and made us welcome. We will present these same items on our visit to Tinonee Public School on June 20.
School Athletics
On Friday, June 15, Tinonee Public School have their Inter-House Athletics Carnival at the Bob Collier Oval, Tinonee Recreation Ground. The students walk to the oval along Claxton Street, and motorists are asked to take care between 9am and 9.30am. Canteen manager Michelle is calling for helpers with the barbecue, packing orders and serving on this very busy day. Please call the school is you can help.
Congratulations to the school’s small band which, under the bandmaster Roger Griffiths and coordinator Mrs Carter, finished a fantastic second place at the Taree Eisteddfod. On Wednesday K-2 and years 3-4 choirs will take part in the Eisteddfod at the Manning Entertainment Centre. Years 5 and 6 Senior Choir will also be competing. Good luck to all.
Passing of Bill Snowden
Well known Tinonee resident Bill Snowden passed away on Thursday, June 7, after a period of illness. Bill and his wife Shirley operated the Tinonee General Store for many years during their 50 years in the town. Both were involved in the Tinonee Bush Fire Brigade and received service medals and commendations. Bill had also been a member of Wingham Rifle Club. He and Shirley were married for over 60 years, and their daughters and partners Cheryl and Bryson Muldoon, Rhonda and Tim Molloy, Karen and Ted Bowen, and grandchildren and great grandchildren will all miss him. Bill’s funeral service is tomorrow, June 14, at 1.30pm at St. John’s Anglican Church Taree, followed by burial at the Manning Great Lakes Memorial Gardens Pampoolah. We extend our deepest sympathy to Shirley and the family.
