Council’s engineering team has targeted Bulga Creek and Bobin Creek bridges for replacement. As well as constructing new concrete structures in their place, both bridges will be raised above the one in 100 year flood level to provide all-weather access from Wingham through to Elands and further north-east to the Oxley Highway.
“Both bridges are in poor condition, and both are subject to frequent flooding”, Rhett Pattison, MidCoast Council’s manager, projects and engineering said.
“In designing the replacement structures, we have focused on an outcome that will deliver safer, flood-free access for the local community, and reduced on-going maintenance costs.”
Kicking off from June 5, works will continue through to October to demolish the existing Bulga Creek bridge and construct its replacement. Bulga Road will be closed for one day, on Tuesday June 5 between 9am and 3pm, to allow a side-track to be constructed. Locals are encouraged to plan their travel accordingly during the day of closure.
No further road closures are anticipated for the duration of the works, with traffic in both directions using the temporary side-track to cross the creek at the location of the existing Bulga Creek bridge.
Works to demolish and replace the existing Bobin Creek bridge will follow on from completion of the Bulga Creek bridge works.
The two bridge replacement projects have a combined value of $2.8 million, and are funded through a combination of federal and state government grants, along with Council’s contribution of $600,000.
