Wheeler said the side’s main combinations are beginning to gel.
“We showed some good, positive signs,” Wheeler said.
“It was a good team effort.”
The Pirates will meet the Tigers in this Saturday’s pre-season competition final.
Wheeler said he observed their future opponents in their win over Taree City.
“They’re a real physical side so we’ll have to match them up the middle,” Wheeler said.
“Our forwards will have to lead before our outside backs do the rest.”
Meanwhile, Wauchope and Port Macquarie will battle it out in northern pool pre-season final.
The Blues edged out Port City 16-14 to advance to the final, while the Sharks defeated Macleay Valley Mustangs 34-12.
The final will be played at Port Macquarie’s Regional Stadium as part of a six match program.
