Two different orchestras made the trip, a symphony orchestra and a wind ensemble.
They performed at primary schools at Wingham, Tinonee, Cundletown, Old Bar and Taree, as well as Estia Health at Taree.
Accompanying them was the school’s director of ensembles, Steven Hillinger.
“We see it as a positive way the finish the year,” Steven said. “Touring is an important part of what we do.”
Their visit to schools includes an introduction to the various instruments used by the orchestras and students are invited to join the percussion section. Some are invited to conduct the band.
“We want them to get involved and excited,” Steven said, adding that the performances can get loud.
“The schools were so open to having us,” he said. At one school the students had prepared a sign welcoming the orchestra.
Both orchestras performed at Estia Health and residents were given the opportunity to conduct the bands.
Steven explained the performances are free and the students pay their own way. “They see the value in it. They want to give back to their community.”
The school has several ensembles and each goes on tour. Senior students tour for three to four days in different parts of the State while the juniors generally stay closer to home and for shorter periods of time.
