But few fans have the pulling power of Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino.
Tarantino, best known for the films Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill, has pitched a Star Trek movie idea to Paramount Pictures, according to US media reports.
And that pitch has prompted the studio and executive producer J.J. Abrams to assemble a writing team to develop the idea.
Abrams would produce the project and, time permitting, Tarantino could even direct it.
Both have full schedules: Abrams is producing the final chapter of the Star Wars saga, 2019's still-untitled Episode IX, while Tarantino is working on a drama set in Los Angeles around the time of the Charles Manson murders.
But a Tarantino-directed Star Trek film is enough to whip the fans into a frenzy.
Though Tarantino has never tackled an existing film franchise, he has directed television episodes before: of the crime drama CSI and the medical drama ER.
Whether the Tarantino-inspired Star Trek movie ever sees the light of day, or indeed a darkened cinema, remains to be seen.
Star Trek, unusually, has a track record of developing and abandoning ideas.
That includes an unproduced 1970s-era film, Star Trek: Planet of the Titans, the 1970s-era television series Star Trek: Phase II, a franchise reboot film set at Starfleet Academy titled Star Trek: The First Adventure, a Star Fleet Academy television series and an Earth-Romulan War (pre-Original Series) era film titled Star Trek: The Beginning.
