The colourful marine ply cutouts are being sold by the chamber to local shop-keepers to display on the footpath in front of their shops in the lead up to Christmas.
Visual arts teacher Rachel Bloomfield said the project got the students, from years 7-10, in the festive mood early.
“It was fun for the students and discussions about Santa soon began,” she said.
“If you don’t believe you don’t receive” and “be careful what you say, he might be watching” were some of the comments being made.
“Some creative finishes were added and a sense of pride developed within the students when they had completed a job well done.”
The project had some set backs with the students having just two weeks to complete around 20 cutouts.
“We were limited on space and could only work on four or five at a time,” said Rachel.
“It’s also tricky at this time of the year with so many things on.”
But despite the challenges – which included some problems with the paints –Rachel was very impressed with her students.
“They did really well,” she said.
The cutouts will be up in time for the annual Wingham Christmas Street Carnival being held on Thursday, December 14 from 5pm.
