The people of Australia have voted in favour of legalising same-sex marriage with 61.1 per cent voting in the affirmative and 38.4 per cent voting no.
The Turnbull government has now been tasked with changing the law before Christmas to allow same-sex couples to marry.
The result means Australia is poised to join 25 countries that have granted marriage equality including the US, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

So what next?
Same-sex marriage still isn’t legal in Australia despite the majority of the Australian public calling for the change today.
The non-binding, voluntary poll is only a guide for the politicians on how they will treat the issue in parliament and at this stage there is no confirmed bill the MPs and Senators will vote on.
Coalition MPs would be granted a free vote to decide whether the result is passed into law, and it’s likely to be held before the end of the year.
