In the round of 16 the fours team of Steve Harris, Marty Gosper, Kevin Robinson and Rex Johnston (Tuncurry Beach) began their campaign with a strong 24-8 win over Harbord. In the quarter-final they had a much closer tussle with the team from Tumut, only pulling away over the closing ends to record a 26-18 victory. Unfortunately it all came to an end in the semi-final going down to the Narooma combination 13-21. Narooma then went on and won the final.
The zone’s president’s reserve pairs combination of Mark Anderson and John O’Malley (Forster) came up against Tumbarumba in the first game and despite fighting hard they went down 13-23.
In the triples Dave Richardson, Steve Harris and Matt Sargeant (Tuncurry Beach) started out with a bang, taking out the strong Merrylands team 28-14. The next game against another formidable side from Engadine proved much tougher. Despite leading for all the game they went into the last end holding a slender one shot lead. Sargeant then found himself two down and facing defeat with only his last bowl to play. He the stepped up and drew the shot to snatch victory. Again in the semi-final they led all the way only to end up with a draw and have to play an extra end. Sargeant again found himself down and trying to draw the shot. His last bowl disturbed the jack, but unluckily, it finished centimetres short of rolling far enough for shot.
Mark O’Neill (Lansdowne) began the president’s reserve singles with a very good 31-9 win over Beresfield. He followed this up in the quarter-final with a much harder 31-27 win over Walcha. Unfortunately he then came up against the player from Ryde X Phoenix who proved too strong, going down 12-31.
A very strong showing from the representatives from our zone, although we can’t seem to get to the final. Just the same, three semi-finalists from the first four events is to be commended. With another four events still to be decided we may still get a winner yet.
