The ‘them’ she is talking about is the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, and the accident is a nasty one that the rescue helicopter airlifted her from seven years ago.
The ‘it’ Rachel is talking about is a ‘Golf/Family Fun Day for Westpac Helicopter’ fundraiser at Wingham Golf Club on Sunday October 8.
In October 2010, Rachel was in a car accident that saw her spend seven long and excruciating months in hospital, first at John Hunter Hospital, then at Rankin Park Rehabilitation Centre.
“I had to learn how to walk and everything again,” Rachel said.
“I’m lucky I didn’t break my back or neck, but I did break lots of bones in my legs, and ankles, and arms.”
In a strange twist of fate, Rachel married a man, Chris, who also has cause to be forever grateful to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.
When Chris was a teenager, before he met Rachel, he was airlifted from a motorbike accident after riding on a property with friends.
Raising funds for the rescue service is clearly a cause close to the couple’s hearts, and after brainstorming with friends and family, they settled on a combined golf and family fun day.
The golfing part of the day starts at 8-8.30am and will be an 18-hole ambrose with a shotgun start, at a cost of $20 per player.
There will be plenty of activities running from 10am to 2pm for the smaller members of the family with Manning Valley Active Oosh coming to the party to help out, with a jumping castle, a soccer field, and face painting among other things. Entry for children is $5.
A barbecue lunch will be available to buy, along with a cake stall for the sweet-toothed. Raffles will be drawn at 2pm.
Rachel and Chris are hoping to make this an annual event if all goes well.
Nominations for golf and cart bookings can be made by calling the Golf Club on 6553 4761.
