The MidCoast Council is organising free detectives activities these school holidays, with four activities running from Wednesday, September 27 through to Wednesday, October 4.
Life in a pond will be the subject of investigation, with studies across four local water bodies over the week, with activities suitable for all children aged four and above.
Kids will use dip nets to catch critters in the water, then try to identify them and interpret what story the bugs are telling us about the health of their ecosystem.
On Wednesday, September 27 the activity will investigate what lives in the pond across the road from the library at Hallidays Point, followed by the river at Gloucester on Friday, September 29.
The following week will see the activity held at Cattai Wetlands on Tuesday, October 3, then back to Hallidays Point for the last activity on Wednesday, October 4.
MidCoast Council’s education and engagement officer Kirsty Hughes is organising the event.
“Water bugs are fascinating little creatures. We find so much more than tadpoles, and kids love learning about what story they tell us about the quality of the water,” she said.
Children participating must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Interested families can book to attend the free events by contacting Kirsty on 0427 959 175, or education@midcoastwater.com.au, or by contacting the library about the activities at Hallidays Point on 6559 3066.
This activity is also available during term time for schools and other groups.
