Volunteer numbers were low at the August 27 working bee but Greg said the small group still managed to achieve a great deal.
The former organic certification inspector is a champion of the garden and visits to weed or water at least once a week, sometimes two or three times a week if he is in town.
“It is important the community be taught and have the opportunity to grow fresh organic food,” Greg said.
Greg moved to Taree about six months ago and chose to start a garden bed at the community garden instead of at his home in George’s Lane.
“Gardening is also about community and people. I have a garden at my bush place at Doyle’s River but about six months ago Meniere’s Disease returned so I chose to move to town. I now walk or cycle everywhere and the garden is close. I love it.
“I started a new garden bed in an area that was quite weedy. I bought soil, plants and seeds and it’s wonderful to be able to pick from it. When I visit the garden I can grab a few things for a salad or cooking, I take mostly from my garden bed and it’s great to be able to grow food in town.”
Taree Community Garden is located in Wynter Street opposite the Aldi carpark.
