It was not a typical winter’s day and the sunrise which lit the sky at 6.24am was not a typical morning moment. Kieran Barrett stood in Harry Bennett Park, looked to the still water and emerging colours in the sky and knew he had made the right decision to rise early “to shoot in magic hour” with his DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone. The result is an image that delighted thousands of Manning Valley residents on Wednesday when it was shared on the Manning River Times and Thumbs Up Manning Valley Facebook pages.
“This is a photo I’ve wanted to capture for years. The Manning Valley always looks nice, but it looks stunning during magic hour – dawn and dusk.”
Kieran is 33 years old and a former student of St Joseph’s and St Clare’s in Taree. He now calls Melbourne home but returns to Tinonee to visit friends and family and with each trip he likes to fly his drone as “there is plenty of picturesque places” and cites Brushy Cutting Lookout near Wingham as “a brilliant place to get great photos” around sunset.

Visual media is Kieran’s craft and his skill is sourced from attending film school in New Zealand, work as a television and commercial editor, years as a videographer in Canada and now it’s video production work in Melbourne. It’s work but magic hour with a drone is pleasure and he says it’s “a great way for me to tear myself away from the computer and get outside and explore and meet new people.”
