“They are all about beautifying the community and it is hoped that we get lots of volunteers to help look after them.” Wingham Chamber of Commerce member Pete Trood said.
“We have endeavoured to select fruiting and edible plants so that the community can enjoy the fruits of their labour.” he said.
Wingham Nursery has been of great assistance with the selection of plants.
“Six weeks ago, we started building the planter boxes and we have finally completed 15 of them.
“The timber was supplied by Machins Sawmill at a discounted price. We built them over three Saturdays with the help of Kev, Sean, Simon, Col, Grahame, Eric.” Pete said.
“We stained them with a natural oil, both inside and out, twice, to give good UV protection and then we placed a mesh, gravel and a layer of hessian inside and topped it with a special mix of soil from Aus Eco Landscaping Supplies.
“Last Saturday, a team of helpers planted out all the boxes with shrubs and under-plantings to give colour. This team included Kim, Gary, Carol, Kev, Tess, Jenny, Sean and Ivan ” Pete said
With more community support, the Wingham Chamber of Commerce is committed to creating more boxes.
“We have attached laminated labels to the boxes which outlines the caring plan for the planter boxes. If you are a business, you can promote a planter box for the one off cost of $100.
“You look after it and we attach a large plaque acknowledging the commitment of your business. As an individual or school, you can parent a planter box but at no cost. You look after it and we attach a smaller plaque acknowledging your commitment.
“You can also partner a planter box by being part of a team that looks after the remainder of the planter boxes on a roster system. If you want to see your town beautified, show your community support.” Pete said.
