His family are of traditional Pakistani Muslim ethnicity and regularly set Kumail up with various Pakistani women in the hope of continuing the tradition of an arranged marriage, much to the annoyance of Kumail.
At one of his stand up shows Kumail meets Emily (Zoe Kazan, granddaughter of esteemed director Elia Kazan), an American graduate, and their relationship blossoms.
The Emily character is based on Emily V. Gordon, Nanjiani's real-life wife and script collaborator.
Kumail becomes concerned about what his traditional Muslim parents will think of her and worries about telling his family, knowing they would disapprove and disown him.
When Emily suddenly is taken ill, despite the fact they are no longer a couple, Kumail is asked to contact Emily’s parents. During this time Kumail develops a bond with her deeply concerned mother Beth (Holly Hunter), and father Terry (Ray Romano).
While having to deal with Emily's illness, and her parents whom he had never met previously, Kuamail will need to deal with the emotional tug of war between his family and his heart.
Starring: Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter and Ray Romano.
