The scholarships are awarded each year to kids who already have a talent or passion, but just need a helping hand to reach their goals.
This year scholarships were awarded across sport, art, music and education, including Australian Paralympian of the Year Maddi Elliott, who is from Gillieston Heights, and up and coming music star Finnian Johnson who performed at the recent Tamworth Country Music Festival.
Finnian, from Aberdare, performed at the presentation evening along with country pop singer Melanie Dyer.
Tinonee local Jasmine Chamberlain was one of the people awarded a scholarship by Variety. Jasmine has a passion and love for horse riding which has not only led Jasmine to success in her sport but also helped to give her confidence in other areas of her life such as school.
Training five times a week, she hopes to one day make the Special Olympics Equestrian squad and eventually teach other people with disabilities to ride. She will use her scholarship to fund her training and memberships costs.
“Variety Scholarships are an extra helping hand for kids to make sure they don’t miss opportunities to achieve their goals,” Variety NSW regional director Jason Bourke said.
“Whether they want to be Australia’s next gold medal swimmer, study to become a doctor at university or even be the next rock star, our scholarships will help cover costs like training fees, accommodation and equipment.
“All kids deserve a fair go in life and Variety, along with our generous donors, are proud to be a part of making a difference in the lives of kids from Newcastle and the Hunter.”
