MidCoast Council, together with contractors St Hilliers, will soon commence remediation works on Killawarra Bridge’s southern embankment. Preparatory works will commence from Monday, January 30.
Located on Gloucester Road around 10 kilometres from Wingham, the Killawarra Bridge is a key route for travellers into and out of Wingham.
“Issues with the fill material used to construct the embankments back in 1988 were identified last year, and a temporary solution including reduced speed limits has been in place since around July,” said Phil Miles, manager Projects and Engineering.
“The dispersive nature of the material on the southern side has gradually undermined the level of support provided by the embankment, which in turn has affected the quality of the road surface on the bridge’s approach”.
MidCoast Council, in partnership with the RMS and in consultation with the St Hilliers project team, has designed a permanent solution that involves reconstructing the embankment and replacing the road pavement on the southern end of the bridge.
The work will be conducted over a period of approximately four weeks, with the road closed to through traffic from Wednesday, February 8 to Wednesday March 1, 2017.
“While there will be significant disruption to traffic during the closure period, timing has been a key factor in designing the program of works”, Mr Miles said.
“And although we’ve been able to maintain traffic flow until now, the time is right for a permanent and sustainable solution to be implemented which offers improved traffic safety”.
Detours will be in place via The Bucketts Way for motorists travelling to Wingham from south of the Killawarra Bridge, adding around 20 minutes travel time. Motorists are asked to observe all signage and directions from road crews while the roadworks are being undertaken.
