All was well for the Mathesons as they led up to the 17th end with the score then being 16 apiece and the tables then turned with Chris and his less experienced partner winning the following four ends to go to a handy lead of five shots.
However with two ends to play the Mathesons picked up two shots on the 20th end and with Chris to play his last bowl on the final end he found himself down three shots and it could then have required an extra end to decide which team went to the final.
The ‘steady-as-you-go’ Chris restricted his opposition to two shots, thereby winning the excellent game by the single shot. A lot of credit for the victory went to Joanne, who must be considered the most improved bowler in the club.
In the other semi Peter and Elaine Holden combined well and went to a good lead of five shots on the ninth end against Greg Bartlett and Claudia O’Donnell. On the 15th end they extended that to eight shots with the score being 15-7. However that was the last end the Holdens won with Greg and Claudia powering away to take the game by five shots.
The quality of play in both games was of a very high standard and the final will be interesting and should not be missed for those appreciating good bowls.
Saturday social
Thiry four players turned out to enjoy the playing conditions with some big scores resulting with the rink creating the most noise winning the day, that being Lillian Cross playing with Laurie Mullen up against Col Watson and Lorraine Rothe. With a +22 Lillian claimed victory and all the credit for the win and by the far the most most noise.
John, Black, Mick Hollebone and Garry Williams went well early and led by six shots on the seventh end and then remained on eight for 10 ends to eventually go down to Jim Gillogly, Leonie Gilford and Mick Clerke, a visitor from Newcastle, to the tune of a +2 and take out the runners up for the day.
The lucky draw winners were Steve Blayden of Stockton playing with Barry Smith and Glenn Gilford against Greg Bartlett, Peter Kriss and Tim Richardson.
Another big score of a +16 went to Col Hinton, Peter Holden and Graeme Mansfield up against Denise Matheson, Kev Coles and Dennes Rothe.
Brian Williams, Laurelle Dennes and Greg Foy just got up by a shot over Glen Dennes, Margaret Hinton and Elaine Holden.
Also with a +1 win were Daniel Leadbeater, Peter Williams and Peter Tindall over Graeme Ireland, Snow Trenchard and Maureen Hollebone.
