The principal event, the $80,000 Taree Gold Cup will highlight Sunday’s TAB card to be run at the Bushland Drive track. Friday’s Manning River Times will include a four page liftout on the carnival.
Unbeaten Forster-Tuncurry marched into the Lower North Coast Rugby Union grand final but had to work hard to subdue Wallamba 21-15 in the major semi-final.
Wallamba will now meet Manning Ratz in Saturday’s final after the Ratz accounted for Myall Coast 50-30 in the minor semi-final.
Despite losing 4-0 to minor premiers Wallis Lake Taree should have booked a final five berth in the Football Mid North Coast Premier League.
The Wildcats will pick up easy points with the bye in this weekend’s final round. Currently Taree sits on 28 points, one shy of fourth placed Kempsey Saints.
Kempsey Saints and Macleay Rangers drew 1-1 while Port FC beat Port Saints and Tuncurry-Forster defeated Port United 5-1 in other games.
There was a massive upset in the opening week of the southern all age football playoffs.
Tinonee beat the hitherto undefeated Old Bar in a penalty shoot out in a qualifying semi-final. Pacific Palms beat Lansdowne 2-1 in the other qualifying match. The elimination games saw Hallidays Point beat Taree 1-0 and Tuncurry-Forster beat Wingham 3-0.
In Saturday’s fixtures Old Bar will play Hallidays Point while Lansdowne meets Tuncurry-Forster.
Macleay Valley had a stunning form reversal to upset Forster-Tuncurry 48-32 in the Group Three Rugby League game at Kempsey. The previous week the Mustangs were thrashed 86-18 by Wingham.
Five-eighth Steven Blair scored 34 points for the Mustangs.
Luke Steel notched his 200th first grade game for Wingham Tigers in the 28-4 win over Old Bar at Old Bar while Port Macquarie belted Wauchope 46-0. Port City accounted for a depleted Taree City 48-28 at Port.
There will be two games played on Saturday, both deferred from July 2. Wingham hosts Forster-Tuncurry while Old Bar plays Taree City at Old Bar. These games will determine the final semi-final positions although Port Macquarie will finish minor premiers for the second successive year.
