Six new junior race boards have been added to the Old Bar gear shed thanks to MidCoast Water and the patronage of some valued supporters. Early on this season, vice president and nipper age manager Brian Kelleher saw the need to upgrade the equipment used by the juniors.
"The board racks looked full but most of the equipment was old, damaged and definitely not competitive." Kelleher explained.
"Also the boards we had were all of the smaller size, not suited to our older age groups."
The six new boards that hit the beach for the first time last weekend are slightly larger soft foam construction that will serve the junior members for a number of years as they develop into the life savers of the future. A grant application from MidCoast Water helped secure three of the boards and a further three have been purchased and named in appreciation of weekly barbecue volunteers, Old Bar Quality Meats and life members Carolyn and Bevan Weiley, who have all made contributions to the club this season. The boards will be in high demand when at the branch carnival rolls around.
A small group of club member have also been working on a much needed revamp of the clubs first aid area.
The area has been stripped bare, walls and doors replaced and now repainted. The aim has been to have clear area with better protection from the wind, sand and spray that hammer the beachfront building. The next step is racks and sealed storage containers to house new and existing first equipment and suppliers, giving the volunteer member a better more functional working space.
Works are due to be completed in time for the branch carnival.
There will be a meeting at the clubhouse 7.30 tonight and this will hopefully finalise the last of the preparations and allocation of volunteers for the event. Contact:
