Welcome to this weeks’ Wingham Golf Club report and it was the weekend of the February Taree Toyota monthly Mug/MRD Electrical Medal/ Kangaroofing Long Drives, so a big field was expected. However the very heavy Friday rain must have put a lot of golfers off playing. Either that or it was “bring a friend“ day.

Saturday Taree Toyota Monthly Mug/MRD Electrical Medal/Kangaroofing Long Drive
ONLY 45 golfers greeted the starter Saturday but some good scores resulted anyway despite the heavy conditions. Best on the day was club president Gregg Foy with a nett 70, beating A-grade nett winner Franz Schubert on a countback. There were only two grades Saturday with the small field, 0-16 A-grade and 17 plus for B-grade. Gregg Foy was the star performer, winning both the mug and the A-grade medal and Paul Shepherd won B-grade nett and medal. The two gross winners were Jason Fowles 80 c/b) in A-grade and Garry Masters (95) won B-grade. There were three grades in the Kangaroofing long drives, Adam Beattie winning A-grade, Steve Abbott B-grade and new member Mark Donnan C-grade. Well done. In the ball competition, the course was definitely the winner, nett 77 on a countback by Cam Darby the final recipient.
The nearest to the pins were hard to win with the conditions, but some great shots were recorded with “shot of the day” going to Wayne Lewis with his approach to the All About Conveyancing 4th/13th. Others included Nev Blanch on the Wingham Plaza Butchers 1st/10th, Syd Gilfillan the Wingham Gourmet Meats 3rd/12th, Jim Bradshaw the 7th/16th Bayview Seafoods and finally Steve Abbott the 9th/18th Bent on Food hole.
A number of players also played Pennants on Sunday with Wingham fielding teams in Divisions 1, 3 and 4. Only Division 4 won, with a great effort over the very strong Forster club. Well done lads.
Wednesday veterans
A GOOD field of 61 players competed for the February medal last week and a countback was needed to separate Bill Crockett, the eventual winner, from runner-up Phil Anderson, both with nett 69. Brian Haynesx was third, a shot back with nett 70. Gross winner was Dave Andrews with a 79. Bill Crockett also won the putting with 27 putts. OBE winner was a great score, Lionel Fell winning with a nett 73. NTP’s were won by Dave Elliott on the 3rd/12th, Bill Crockett the 7th/16th and Brian Roberts won the 9th/18th with a good shot.
Wednesday ambrose
FORTY five golfers enjoyed fine conditions Wednesday arvo, the winners being the “Browns plus 1” team ( captain Rod Brown) firing a 6 under par (30) nett 26 and one eighth to beat runners-up, “Operators” (Tim Smith) by less than a shot with “That’ll Do” (Peter Bell) third. Reid Brown also won the NTP on the third and Mitch Saxby won the club voucher.
Thursday LJ Hooker Chook Run
THIRTY golfers had an enjoyable day Thursday, weather wise anyway, and scoring was exceptional with 21 points not getting a mention. Sharon Juozaitis (new nickname “youhateus), was the best on the day with “daylight second’. Sharon had 26 points, her best score ever, winning by three shots from runner-up Craig Harrison on 23 points. Then came three players on 22 points, Graham Lewis, Neville Blanch and yours truly. Several players with 21 got nothing. NTP’s were won by Barry Brown on the third and Dave Elliott on the seventh (20 cm).
Coming events
THIS Saturday is a 4BBB Stableford Medley (men and women), in conjunction with that day that all men love, “Valentine’s day”. Might see you there. Good luck and good golfing.
