Clean Up Australia Day, in its 26th year, is more than just about picking up rubbish. It is about declaring your commitment to reducing the rubbish hotspots in your local area and sending out a message to the local litterbugs that their behaviour is unacceptable.
According to Ian Kiernan AO, chairman and founder of Clean Up Australia, the actual event itself is just one way we can keep on top of all the rubbish that accumulates in areas around us. We also need to reduce our consumption of plastics and other biodegradable materials, recycling what we do use, particularly plastics.
“Gather your friends, family and neighbours; community and sports groups together and choose a local site that is importance to you. Register it online and we will send you your Clean Up Australia Day kit for free,’ Mr Kiernan said.
“You can even add to the fun and have a barbeque and don the latest Clean Up t-shirts and caps available on the website.”
In 2015 more than 535,000 volunteers removed an estimated 14,000 tonnes of rubbish from 6,890 sites across Australia.
“But if that doesn’t appeal – there is another way YOU can be involved. In 2016 YOU can have your say in programs Clean Up develops as we continue our efforts to stop rubbish. YOU donors choose the rubbish item that annoys YOU the most and Clean Up allocates your donation towards development of a program that focuses on that item. Becoming a YOU donor is as easy as texting CLEAN to 0437 371 371 or follow the prompts on our website. ” said Mr Kiernan.
To show their commitment to protecting the local environment NSW residents also have the opportunity to participate in community consultation by making a submission to the NSW government about the scope of what a Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) should look like in NSW.
To support the Boomerang Alliance’s CDS proposal go to www.boomerangalliance.org.au/submission. Submissions close February 26.
Clean Up Australia is a not-for-profit charity which relies on donations from individuals and businesses to help us fund the free materials we provide for the thousands of volunteers at community sites all year round. Membership of YOU will help us eradicate those rubbish items that consistently plague their efforts.
Come on Australia - 2016 is your chance to get involved and join the hundreds of thousands of volunteers who will grab their white and yellow bags and don their gloves to clean up their local community. Over the last 26 years volunteers have donated more than 29.8 million hours towards caring for the environment through Clean Up Australia Day, by removing the equivalent of 315,776 ute loads of rubbish from 158,809 sites across the country.
Registrations for 2016 Clean Up sites are now open. To register go to cleanupaustraliaday.org.au.
