Environment Minister Mark Speakman announced this year’s Green Globe Awards winners, which celebrate environmental excellence, leadership and innovation, at a gala ceremony at the Art Gallery of NSW, on Thursday October 15.
Mr Bromhead said Greater Taree City Council received a $2 million federal government grant in 2011 to restore the Big Swamp area by reducing acid runoff into the Manning River.
“I congratulate Council for winning the Natural Environment Sustainability category for their Big Swamp project, which restored a badly degraded 2,000 hectare wetland,” Mr Bromhead said.
“The area was extensively drained for agriculture and contained some of the worst cases of acid sulphate soils on the NSW coast.
“The project has improved wetland vegetation and water quality and created a new 80 hectare tidal wetland.”
Mr Speakman congratulated this year’s 21 winners for their role in leading sustainable development across the economy and community.
An independent panel of leading environmental experts helped select this year’s winners. The awards are considered the leading environmental awards in NSW and have been running for 16 years.
