WELCOME back to the Wingham Golf Club weekly report with the news that the 2015 Country Wide Business Solutions Club Championships have been finalised after the club captain Neville and his match committee, made the brave decision to go ahead with the day’s play Saturday last, despite the course being extremely wet and the threat of more rain on the day. Alas, their decision was vindicated with Saturday being a beautiful day and most players were able to complete their round.

The 2015 Club Champion is Ben Marron after he shot a magnificent two under par round for a three round total of 220, two under par after two par rounds in rounds one and two. Congrats Ben. In second spot was the ‘old fella’ Rod Brown, followed by his son and defending champion, Reid Brown, in third spot. Rod and Reid did however win both the senior and junior club championships respectively. In the other grades, B-grade (10-14 handicap), was also a convincing win to AJ Miller on 245, nine shots in front of runner-up Damian Moore with Bob Polley, a further shot back in third spot. B1 grade (15-19) champion is new member Michael Parker with a three round total of 268, four shots in front of runner-up Mark Fotheringham. Finally C-grade (20 plus handicap) champion is popular member, Daryl Heywood with a three round total of 286, five shots in front of runner-up Wayne Lewis. Congratulations Daryl, a very deserving win. In the overall nett competition, Brendon Walker was the winner with three round total of 223.
A big congratulations must go to the club captain, Neville Blanch and his hard working ‘helpers’, and also to greenkeeper Dave and his ‘helpers’, especially after the problems caused by the weather and its’ effect on the course. Finally a big thankyou and congratulations must go to Garry and Averill Chapman from Country Wide Business Solutions on their sponsorship of the 2015 club championships. They are also sponsoring the club matchplay championships, a great effort.
Onto the day’s event Saturday, which was an 18 hole stroke event for the Cleavers Tyres trophy, and the winner was Greg McLeod with a score of 95/nett 71 by a single shot from a number of players on nett 72. Of those Rod Brown (76/72) won A-grade and Michael Parker (88/72) won B-grade. Paul Shepherd (97/nett 75) won C-grade on a countback. Stroke winners were Ben Marron A-grade with a fine two under par 70, Ben Heywood B-grade with 88 and “the old man” Daryl Heywood won C-grade with 95. Well done lads.
Nearest to the pins were extremely difficult to win with the conditions not suitable for most players. However, Rod Brown still managed to put one very close on the Bayview Seafoods 7th/16th to win “shot of the day”. Other winners were Ben Marron on the Wingham Plaza Butchers 1st/10th, Rod Desborough the Caddies 3rd/12th, Neville Blanch the All About Conveyancing 4th/13th and Jason Fowles won the 9th/18th Bent on Food hole.
In the ball competition, the course was definitely the winner with the last ball won being that of Nev Blanch with a 78 on a countback.
Wednesday veterans
LAST Wednesday was also the final round of the vets championships as well and again, scoring was extremely difficult with the wet conditions. However the results have not been finalised yet as there is an 18 hole playoff today for A-grade to be played today between Sandy Dunn and Syd Gilfillan. Good luck to both players.
In the daily event however, we can produce a winner, and that was Michael Parker with a nett 72 on a countback from runner-up Syd Gilfillan. Jim Bradshaw was third with a nett 73. Nearest to the pins were difficult to win with the 3rd/12th going to Rex White with 8 metres and the 7th/16th to Michael Parker, a little closer with three metres.
Thursday LJ Hooker Chook Run
THE weather had a profound effect on the chook run field this week with only 15 players braving the conditions. Of those Rod Brown was ‘the man’, playing twice and recording 22 and 19 points respectively. This was good enough to claim both first and third prizes. Rod also won the NTP on the third hole. Brendon Walker was the only other winner on the day, his 21 points good enough for second place and he also won the NTP on the seventh.
