Steel overhauled the now retired Brendan Summerfield's tally of 788 points.
Last year Steel played his 200th game for the club.
While the match wasn't fiery by any means it did have its moments. Referee Barry Murray sent Port prop Sam Flanagan to the sin bin for 10 minutes early in the second half.
Soon after Group Three president Wayne Bridge, who was one of the match officials attending the game, told Port's training staff to refrain from yelling comments to the referee and touch judges. Soon after Murray sent a Port trainer to behind the fence after he reportedly made a comment to a touch judge as he was making his way onto the field to attend to an injured player.
The trainer was unable to fulfill his duties for the remainder of the match.
