Last weekend they took a chance on the weather and hit the highway for the Nerong Fair Show ‘N’ Shine.
The two Wingham locals impressed the judges with their Morris Minors, both dating back to the 1950s, bringing home best in class trophies.
“It’s good to get the two trophies for Wingham,” said Gary, owner of two (and a half) Morris Minors and proud grandfather.
Gary’s show car is a 1957 Morris Minor 1000 Ute that he has owned for five years. He also drives a maroon “Morrie” daily with both cars on full rego.
The rear of the Ute is airbrushed with Disney’s Goofy and Gary admits that as you get older you go back to childhood.
“The only difference between men and boys is the cost of toys,” laughs Phil who likens classic car ownership to a contagious disease.
Phil has owned his show Morrie for 3-4 years and had it fully restored last year. It will soon become his daily driver although he also owns a (rather more comfortable) early 1980s Statesman.
Phil and Gary are not what you would call ‘trophy hunters’ but they admit to liking the feeling of the win.
“It makes the work worthwhile,” they agree.
