The week commemorating National Aboriginal and Islander Day of Celebration begins Sunday July 6 through to Sunday July 13, with an open Community Day event 9am – 3pm on Friday at Fotheringham Park in Taree.
NAIDOC week is an opportunity for all people across the Biripi Nation and the Manning Valley to embrace and participate in events held throughout the week. The week celebrates Aboriginal People in Australian national history, from the Frontier Wars to those who have served with honour and pride in Australia’s military conflicts and engagements across the globe.
“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture in its many forms brings people together with united purpose, working collaboratively through established partnerships,” said Gerard José, GTCC general manager.
“This year, we pause to reflect on the sacrifice Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People have played in shaping our identity nationally and here in the Manning Valley.
“We proudly highlight and recognise the roles they played, and honour their priceless contribution to our nation.”
NAIDOC is celebrated in Indigenous communities and by Australians from all walks of life. The week offers up a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
“We would like to acknowledge the donations and support from the business community,” said Tracey Anderson, Aboriginal Community Officer. “We also thank the many community partners for their contributions of time and support for NAIDOC Week events.”
