Brace, 64, was named in the Australian side following the national championships. Australia will send three teams of two to the titles.

"They take the top six scores,'' he explained.

Brace the Manning River Times-Iguana Sportstar of the Week, earning a $50 open order at Iguana. He was nominated by Manning Valley Rifle Club.

This will be the fourth time he's shot for Australia, the first being nine years ago in Trans Tasman competition against New Zealand.

He's not sure who he'll be lining up against in Canberra.

"Anyone from the Pacific Rim can be there - New Zealand, Samoa - the US might even send a team,'' he said.

Brace started shooting competitively in the late 1980s.

He admits sport wasn't a big part of his life when he was a younger man.

"I didn't like cricket or football. I used to do a bit of bike riding and play some tennis. But I'd always had guns and I decided to look into it a bit more when we moved here.''

Initially he shot with the Sporting Shooters Australia at Wingham before switching to the MV Rifle Club.

Brace said shooting is a sport for all ages.

"You can start when you're 12 and shoot until they put you into the ground,'' he said.

It's also a case of have gun will travel. Shooting has taken Brace all over Australia to contest national and State championships.

"I usually have a bit of success there,'' he said.

He is just back from the ACT Metal Silhouette Titles where he won the AAA grade light rimfire rifle and was second in A-grade light centrefire rifle, third in open master grade rimfire and third in open AAA-grade centrefire. He was second overall in the five gun match.

He shoots at the Koorainghat range at club level a couple of times a month, where he is also heavily involved in coaching.

"But a lot of the shooting I do you can't do it around here, so I travel,'' he said.
